Praying for a change in abortion laws

Lord God,

You are not surprised by the case before the Supreme Court or the people on either side of the issue of abortion and the right to life. You love all of us equally. You don’t condemn the woman who aborts her child or the lobbyist who fights for a woman’s right to choose; you don’t condemn the conservative who shouts hateful remarks about Planned Parenthood or people who shout back.

But you love them equally. You grieve over the hate and the misrepresentation of your love and your law. You weep over the loss of life. You grieve with those who will experience the trauma of taking another person’s life, even if that life cannot survive on its own.

So Lord, without judgment of either side, I lift up this issue of life and love. I pray for our country to value what you value over political leanings and policies. We are not conservatives or liberals–we are children of God, created in your image. We are on this earth to bring people to Jesus, not list all their sins or shame them for their decisions. We must lead people to Jesus. But we cannot choose who should live. We must not play God.

Lord, I pray for your will over this decision that’s before the Supreme Court. I pray for a change in abortion laws. I pray for justice and protection for the unborn and grace. I ask for increased support for the fearful women who are carrying children they don’t want or can’t care for. I ask for a change in the law to protect more lives. I ask for wisdom for the Supreme Court justices. I pray for the protection of protestors and advocates. I ask that your presence fill Washington; I pray against the spirits of division, dissension, murder, hatred, and confusion. I grieve the loss of millions of babies to abortion. I grieve the trauma inflicted on their mothers through psychological pressure and dangerous medical practice. Lord, sustain the broken and lead them into a greater understanding of your love.

Make us who follow you wise, empathetic, gracious, and forgiving. Give us courage to make righteous decisions and humility to keep us from judging those who do not. You are the only authority and Judge. We are merely ambassadors for the gospel. And the gospel is a story of grace and mercy.

Help us live the gospel, even as we pray for justice and protection for the unborn child. I pray for peace.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

Genesis 1:26-27

Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all creatures that move along the ground.” So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

John 1:1-5

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

Matthew 7:1-5

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
