Shakespeare Every Day
A year of Shakespeare? What an intriguing idea! I did a year of C.S. Lewis not long ago; why not Shakespeare?
After all, I’ve just started another year of the One Year Bible. We’re doing it as a family, so I ran out yesterday and re-bought everyone his own copy. Somehow, these paperback Bibles all disintegrated or something after the last time (only 3 of us did it then).
Of course, it’s already Jan. 3, but catching up is a part of a yearly reading routine, anyway, so what’ wrong with starting off a little behind? We’re getting on track today. The secret with a one-year reading schedule is to never get behind more than 3 days. Then it becomes a little oppressive, like a school reading assignment. But in small doses, it’s a fabulous habit. The One Year Bible can be accomplished in only about 15 minutes a day.
Apparently, someone had a similar idea about reading Shakespeare. All 37 authored plays, 9 co-authored plays, and 154 sonnets, completely read in 30 minutes per day for a whole year. I’m inspired to try it another year. (Does that still count as “inspiration”?)
I hope someone I know tries this. I’d love to see how they liked it. I’m so in love with several of Shakespeare’s plays, mostly because I’ve taught them (Julius Caesar, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, As You Like It). Yet, there are so many I haven’t read.
